Tim Connell has been to Woods Hole a bunch of times, most notably with 7-string player Cesar Garabini, with guitarist-singer-songwriter Jack Dwyer, and with guitarist Jason Davis. This year he brings Catherine Bent, one of my favorite cellists, someone I've known several years from Brazilian music circles, a true cello pioneer.

Catherine Bent built on her classical training in New York’s Downtown music scene, while also pursuing a freelance career ranging from opera to rap. She's performed and recorded with Lee Konitz, Joe Jackson, Cirque du Soleil, Merce Cunningham, Enya and many other great ones. During her jazz studies at New England Conservatory, a new door opened when a colleague brought a Brazilian choro book to a rehearsal. A few years later, on her first visit to Brazil, she was acknowledged as a legitimate voice in choro by Jacob do Bandolim’s legendary band Conjunto Época de Ouro, and she has many times since been a guest on their live radio broadcast. Her fluency in the repertoire and language of Brazilian music has led Brazilian mandolinist and choro scholar Pedro Aragão, to call Catherine the “Primeira violoncelista do choro” (first cellist of choro).
